March Recruiting Events

The month of March offers 2 opportunities to look for candidates, or to look for jobs. First, the Santa Fe Community College and the NM WIRED program are sponsoring a Green Career Day March 10. The Fair will be from 10AM to 2PM on the college campus. We also are hosting our second virtual job fair online from March 15-19. Companies will have a virtual booth with current job opportunities, and job seekers can apply directly to the hiring entity without waiting in line. We will have a link to the fair on this site starting March 15.

Screening Job Applicants on Social Networks

There have been a number of articles in both human resource publications and in business news about the information one can glean from a social network site such as Facebook. The fact that a potential employer may be able to uncover more information than the applicant is obligated to share is a caution both to people posting on these sites and employers researching them. Lora Bentley posted a story on her IT Business Edge blog about the City of Bozeman, Montana asking job applicants for their logon information for Facebook, MySpace and others. Whether just searching the web or getting logon info, the employer can access information about the applicant's age, race, religion and other protected information. This leaves the employer open to discrimination charges! Lora said she plans to check with a privacy law expert - to be continued.
